Speaker Bios

Michael A. Schlatman, IAAI-CFI

Michael is President of Fire Consulting & Case Review International, Inc. in Shwnee Mission, Kansas. He hs numerous years of experience insurance investigations, including fire, fraud & related claims. He has his Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Louis University. He is a former police detective involving homicide and arson.

Thomas J. Berscheidt

Tom Berscheidt was born Mrach 19, 1942 in Great Bend, Kansas. He grew up on the family farm located in southern Pawnee County. After graduating from high school, he attended Washburn University and received his B.A. in 1965. He then received his J.D. from Washburn University in January, 1968. In 1990 Tom opened his solo practice in Great Bend. Approximately 75% of his practice has involved civil litigation. He has tried jury trials throughout all of central and western Kansas.

Tom is currently a member of the American Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, Southwest Bar and Barton County Bar Associations. He has served on the Governmental & Ethics Commission for one year (1978-1979) and served as a member of the Kansas Board of Discipline for Attorneys from 1979 through 1993. Tom has been a speaker at approximately 8 C.L.E. Seminars, primarily on the topics of ethics, trial tactics and mediation. In addition to his trial practice, in 1993, Tom started to serve as a mediator essentially covering all of central and western Kansas.

Steve Moreland, is the Sr. Vice-President & co-owner of American Metropolitan Environmental, Inc., possessing over 20 years of public and private sector experience in environmental consulting/inspection experience, encompassing a wide field of contaminants and hazards [i.e. asbestos, radon, bioaerosols (fungi & bacteria), and VOC's]. Prior to launching AMEI in 1994, Steve was employed by USD 259 - Wichita Public Schools, Environmental Services Department (1987-1995), as one of the first asbestos inspectors in the State of Kansas. At the inception of the department, their primary assignment was to perform an inspection and produce an asbestos management plan for each district building. Eventually, the department became responsible for all environmental concerns for the district, including hazardous waste, underground and aboveground storage tanks, and blood borne pathogens. In a July 27, 2002 article, the Wichita Eagle newspaper dubbed Steve the "mold hunter." He maintains numerous certifications that encompass several environmental disciplines, is a graduate of Butler County Community College, El Dorado, Kansas with an Associate of Science degree, and was awarded the "Color of the Purple Award for Academic Excellence."
